New Mexico's farm ground sits in irrigated valleys and on the eastern High Plains, where dairy and cattle feeding have grown alongside silage, alfalfa, peanuts and chile production.
Water rights are administered by the state engineer and are treated as a separate asset in a review. Declining aquifer levels in parts of the east, acequia and ditch rights in the valleys, and grazing that accompanies many properties all get examined individually.
