Process
The five-step gift review
The same sequence applies to a pickup truck and a thousand acres. Only the depth of each step changes.
- 01
Description
You describe the asset, your relationship to it, and the situation behind the question. Confidential, non-binding, and usually shorter than people expect.
- Who owns it of record
- Where it is and what it is
- Why a gift is being considered now
- 02
Preliminary review
Intake and a reviewer establish whether the facts support a full review at all. Declining here saves everyone months.
- Debt versus realistic value
- Obvious title or authority problems
- Carrying cost
- 03
Professional review
Independent professionals examine the questions the asset raises. Tracks run in parallel where possible.
- Title and survey
- Environmental assessment
- Valuation by a qualified appraiser
- Operational, lease and regulatory review
- 04
Governing-body decision
The matter is prepared, presented and decided. Acceptance is documented in writing; so is declination, with the reason.
- Conflicts disclosed and cleared
- Conditions of acceptance stated
- Decision recorded
- 05
Transfer and stewardship
Only after written acceptance. Transfer is completed through the appropriate closing professionals, and the asset is then retained for approved charitable use or responsibly disposed of.
- Closing and recording
- Insurance and custody
- Stewardship plan
A submission does not:
- commit Mustard Farms to accept the asset;
- transfer title, possession or responsibility;
- create a deduction or establish any value;
- obligate you to proceed at any point.
Mustard Farms does not provide legal, tax, appraisal or financial advice. Proposed gifts are subject to legal, financial, title, environmental, operational and governing-body review and written acceptance. Donors should consult independent advisers.
